Rotation 1: Marine Fishes and Invertebrates of Catalina

  • Review of ecological terms, fish behavior, invertebrate classification
  • Overview of the formation of Catalina
  • Overview of marine organisms of Catalina
  • One hour snorkel
  • Snorkel debrief and organism scavenger hunt
  • Discussion on how scientists study the ocean,
  • Secchi disk measurements, pH measurements
  • Touch tank 

5:00-5:30 p.m.

Clean up for Dinner

Day 2 - Saturday, July 1

Rotation 2: STEAM/Kumeyaay Language

  • Story-telling while practicing Kumeyaay language
  • Hike White’s Landing discussing the ways Native people used the land and its resources
  • Hand-making of fish nets
  • Traditional Kumeyaay games

Open waterfront 

1:00-4:00 p.m.

Rotation 3: Algae

  • Presentation on algae in the laboratory, overview of algae types and characteristics
  • Kayak out to snorkel, collect algae
  • Algal identification and microscope time
  • Herbarium pressing 

4:00-5:00 p.m.

Open waterfront, use of kayaks and stand-up paddleboards

5:00-5:30 p.m.

Clean up for dinner
